Academy Legacy Scholarship Programs
Our mission: The Academy is committed to life-long learning and excellence among funeral service professionals.
In alignment with this mission, the Academy offers scholarships to deserving candidates who are pursuing, or who are dedicated to their own professional development and continuing education during, a career in funeral service.
Danny Hutcheson Professional Development Scholarship
History Scholarship is named for APFSP Past President, James Daniel “Danny” Hutcheson. Danny was a champion of career-long professional development and participation in funeral industry organizations.
Award Cycle One, (up to) $500 award will be granted annually. Application window is November 1 – December 31. Deadline is January 1. Successful Candidates will be notified by March 1.
Guidelines & Eligibility:
- Scholarship is open to licensed Academy members in good standing who have recently completed (in the same calendar year as application) Academy-approved CE courses and/or certification programs.
- New applicants as well as those who have applied in previous years, but have not been awarded a professional development scholarship from the Academy, may apply.
- Academy scholarships are subject to available funds, and are not renewable; a Candidate may only receive an Academy-awarded professional development scholarship once. The Academy reserves the right to not award scholarship(s), in any given award cycle, if no qualified Candidates have applied.
- Academy professional development scholarships are for funeral service related continuing education and certification courses only.
- Funding awards are sent to student upon proof of payment and proof of successful completion of continuing education course(s) and/or certification programs.
- Candidates may submit paid receipts for courses totaling in excess of $500 for reimbursement; however, the total of the award shall not exceed $500.
- Funding is only to be used for reimbursement to the student for course/certification enrollment fees.
- The Academy will only confirm receipt of completed applications and reserves the right to eliminate from consideration unsigned or incomplete applications without further notice to the applicant.
- Only online submissions will be accepted.
- Recipient must request all awarded funds within six months of receiving the award, or any remaining balance of the award will be forfeited.
- All award decisions of the Academy are final.
Fitzgerald Memorial Academic Scholarship
History| Scholarship is named for founding board member of APFSP, and Member Number 1, Edward J. Fitzgerald. The Academy remains grateful for an impactful memorial gift from the Edward Fitzgerald Family Estate in 2022.
Award Cycle Two, $1000 awards will be granted annually. Application window is June 1 – August 31. Deadline is September 1. Successful Candidates will be notified by November 1.
Guidelines & Eligibility:
- Scholarship is open to full-time or part-time students in good standing who are enrolled in ABFSE- or Canadian-accredited institutions/programs. Candidates must be attending classes and actively pursuing a degree in funeral service at the time of application. PLEASE NOTE: Students who are enrolled, but have not yet begun coursework at the time of application, are not yet eligible to apply.
- New applicants as well as those who have applied in previous years, but have not been awarded an academic scholarship from the Academy, may apply.
- Academy scholarships are subject to available funds, and are not renewable; a Candidate may only receive an Academy-awarded academic scholarship one time. The Academy reserves the right to not award scholarship(s), in any given award cycle, if no qualified Candidates have applied.
- Academy academic scholarships are for mortuary science/funeral service study only.
- Funding awards are sent to student upon proof of enrollment, proof of payment for and proof of successful completion of an academic course or courses and/or related required books for the successfully completed academic course.
- Funding is only to be used for reimbursement to the student for course tuition and related required books.
- The Academy does not offer scholarships for graduate studies.
- The Academy will only confirm receipt of completed applications and reserves the right to eliminate from consideration unsigned or incomplete applications without further notice to the applicant.
- Serious extended illness or injury that would delay participation in the program may be considered reason for holding an award in reserve. Time limits and other restrictions may be set by the Academy’s Board of Trustees. Other leaves of absence will be considered on an individual basis.
